What Vintage Means to You - Part VI

60s-70s wedding style

During the sixties, fashion became very fluid and varied, and broke many fashion trends. It was the era of the go-go boot, corduroy pants, paisley prints, mini-dresses and eventually styles we refer to today as “hippie”.

Large sunglasses, heavy eye makeup and pale lipsticks belong in this era. Large funky accessories were used, and hair was big. Think of wearing a minidress (pictured), or a long empire-waist gown to mimic the styles of this era. Put your bridesmaids in batik fabric or paisley or tie-dyed prints. Pass out daisies to your guests, and incorporate this flower into your arrangements. Skinny ties and fitted polyester suits could be worn by the groomsmen.

For a vintage inspired wedding from this era, use mismatched patterns and/or bright, psychedelic colors for your linens and napkins. Think about including patchouli incense sticks in your wedding favors. Hiring a classic rock and oldies band would set the perfect mood for your guests.

What Vintage Means to You - Part V

Vintage weddings

In the mid-1900s, the “womanly” look was back in fashion. Gone were the loose, straight dresses of the 20s, and in were longer skirts and natural waists.

In the 50s, these were replaced by the hourglass silhouette. Pencil skirts were all the rage, accessorized with short gloves and pearls.

Accessories in striking colors, including “mimosa yellow” and “apple blossom pink”, were very popular.

In 1947, Dior launched his first fashion collection. It was characterized by full skirts, large busts and tiny waists. It was such an extravagant use of fabric after the war years, but celebrities and politicians alike became instant fans. The editor of Harper’s Bazaar called it the “New Look”.

Bridesmaids could be dressed in pencil skirts and hats with netting, accessorized with short gloves and collars of pearl.

Your wedding décor should have clean lines and simple design. The grooms can wear pin strip suits and wing-tip shoes.

Think of hiring a band who can play Big Band or swing music, and hire trained swing dancers to perform, and later teach your guests.

What Vintage Means to You - Part I

Vintage is such a great word, but everyone defines it differently.

When I got an invitation to an event with a theme of “Vintage Glam”, the words that sprang to my mind immediately were antique, floral, romantic – think embroidered lace and delicate beading, flowing skirts and floral prints. However, after visiting with the other guests, I found out that their interpretations of the theme ranged from hippies/flower children to roaring 20’s flappers to Regency high society.

There are SO many variations of vintage, and they are ALL CORRECT. Anything that is not current can be defined as vintage. In this 7 part blog series, I will discuss some of the more popular eras that people pull wedding themes from and provide resources for creating your own vintage wedding.

I encourage you to steal ideas and fashions from the pages of history and make them your own!

How to Get Married in Colorado

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010
marriage-certificate

Aside from the fabulous flowers, great food and other wedding details, we don’t want to forget one of the most important aspects of the wedding, the marriage license.

A Colorado marriage license may be issued in any county and used in any county in the State of Colorado. However, the license must be used within 30 days from the date of issue. The license is issued the day it is applied for and may be used immediately. The fee for a marriage license is $30 and must be paid with cash.

Both male and female applicants must appear in person to complete and sign the marriage application. If one party cannot appear due to illness, is out of state, or incarcerated, he or she must obtain an ABSENTEE APPLICATION from the Clerk and Recorder’s office. The party applying must bring the absentee application along with identification for the absent party. Applicants need not be residents of Colorado. ABSENTEE APPLICATIONS MUST BE NOTARIZED.

If either party has finalized a divorce within 30 days of applying for the marriage license, the final decree must be produced. This decree must be signed by the judge or court referee. If the divorce has been final more than 30 days, divorce information must be given regarding date of divorce, place of divorce and court in which the divorce was finalized.

A marriage may be solemnized by a judge of a court of record, a public official whose powers include solemnization of marriages, or in accordance with any mode of solemnization recognized by any religious denomination or Indian nation or tribe. As of August 1993, a couple can solemnize their own marriage without any type of officiant. That’s right, you can perform your own wedding ceremony without an officiant in Colorado and it is legal.

We had the pleasure of working with Sha and Bill to plan their entire Denver wedding….in 9 weeks! It was a fun adventure and we loved seeing all the fabulous details come together for their October wedding at the Chatfield Botanical Gardens. Their wedding ceremony was a full Latin Catholic Mass ceremony followed by a fun cocktail hour. The guests enjoyed fabulous lunch stations from Occasions by Sandy catering. We helped Sha plan all the fun details including candly apple favors, hot apple cider, classic western wall posters and the vintage western design elements. Julie from JS Design Custom created the most incredible custom stationery including invitations, programs, welcome bag elements, seating cards and table names. The fall wedding florals were designed by the very talented Plum Sage Flowers. Girls and Curls made Sha look incredible with professional on-site hair and make-up services. To keep the kids entertained, Wedding & Event Sitters provided on-site wedding childcare for the ceremony and reception. The elegant chocolate wedding cake was created by The Makery. Ken Hiatt from Quality Mobile Sound kept the guests entertained with his fabulous DJ service.

Thank you to the super fabulous Autumn Burke from Autumn Burke Photography. We cannot rave enough about how much we love working with Autumn.

Sha and Bill, thank you so very much for allowing us to be part of the planning process and your wonderful wedding day. We are truly honored to have worked with you.

Debbie & Shelby
