Engagement Photo Tips

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009
Aren’t they cute? Amy and Doug are current clients of Save the Date Events.  Their engagement photos show their beautiful AND fun personalities.  Their photographer, Rachael Grace, is an up-and-coming very talented photographer in Denver.
Here are a few tips for your engagement photos:

1. Dress in a way that makes you feel good. If you are most comfortable in jeans, wear your favorite pair.  There is no “right” or “wrong” way to dress but keep in mind that extra tight or extra baggy are not going to be your best choices for photos.

2.  With #1 in mind, you also want to dress in a similar style to your fiance. If you wear jeans, he shouldn’t be wearing a suit.

3.  Can’t decide on one outfit?  Bring a few. It’s okay to change mid-way through the photo shoot.

4.  Wear make-up.  Even if you don’t usually wear any, at least consider mascara and lip gloss.  The camera makes your everyday make-up seem like you aren’t wearing any so add a little extra on the day of your engagement photos or splurge on a professional to apply your make-up.

5.  Bring your pet.  If your dog is a big part of your life, bring your furry friend for a few photos.

Your photographer can also give you tips and advice on what works for their clients.

Denver NACE Meeting

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Danielle and I attended the April NACE meeting at the new Event Rents facility in South Denver.  We are proud to say that we were members of the winning teams in the table design competition. We loved seeing some of our favorite vendors and networking with new vendors. It was a fun evening with fabulous food from one of our favorite caterers, Occasions by Sandy.  Thanks to the very talented John Heisel for taking these great photos.

We spent a few days this week at the Eventology Conference in Indianapolis.   Not only did we meet some of the best wedding planners in the country, we learned new techniques to take our business to the next level.  We are incorporating great ideas to increase our already award-winning level of service we provide to our clients.  We take education very seriously so that we can continue to be the “best of the best” in Colorado wedding planning.

Introducing Gabby as a New Blogger

Friday, February 27th, 2009

A little bit about me:
I stumbled upon the world of wedding planning mostly by accident. In college, I was required to complete an internship in order to graduate. There weren’t many available, but one did catch my eye: Texas Weddings, one of the largest wedding publications in the state, needed an assistant for one of their sales representatives. I applied and was accepted, and there was no turning back.

During my time interning at Texas Weddings I was exposed to many aspects of the wedding industry and found that I enjoyed them all. From touring new wedding venues, to acting as a photo shoot set assistant on multiple occasions, to organizing fashion shows at various open houses and trunk shows, to sitting in on meetings between brides and their potential vendors – I loved it all. This was right up my alley, and after my internship was over I continued to be involved in the wedding industry working for my first mentor.

When I finished college, I knew exactly what field I wanted to be in. I first worked for a beautiful venue on Lake Travis as one of their three event planners. Eventually I opened my own company, Glass Slipper Events. When my husband’s job brought us to Denver, I found Save the Date Events and immediately started working with Debbie.

I will always remember the first wedding I organized back in Texas. It was an older Asian couple, and their ceremony was a mix of traditional Vietnamese and Christian rituals. The day went smoothly, to my great relief, and everyone had a lovely time. I have coordinated over 30 weddings since then, each one unique and beautiful.

There are two moments at a wedding that I love the most. The first is when the bride first steps out of the changing room, glowing, flowers in hand, hair in place, ready to walk down the aisle. This is actually the most stressful part of the day for me as a wedding planner, but I know it is The Big Moment for the bride. My other favorite moment is when the ceremony is over and the reception has not yet begun – that small piece of time that the bride and groom have to themselves. Beautiful.

I am really excited to now be involved in the Denver wedding and event planning scene. I’m very familiar  with the vendors and venues, and have assisted and coordinated numerous weddings since I began work with Save the Date Events. I am a religious reader of wedding-related blogs and magazines which helps me stay current with all the trends and styles. I will be posting a blog entry every week, each related to an important aspect of a wedding.

You can read more about me in this blog post.  Stay tuned for my etiquette series starting on Monday!

Professional and Qualified Wedding Consultants

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

I just read a great blog post from Las Vegas Wedding Concierge.  I was planning to blog about a similar topic but she did a great job of writing about the topic.  She talks about a professional wedding planner compared to a person who plans weddings as a hobby.  There is much truth in the phrase, “You get what you pay for.”  Here is her post

At Save the Date Events, we took the time to get professionally certified and work with experienced consultants before we even opened our doors.  We have a business license, insurance, an attorney, accountant and various other professionals who help us run a successful business so that we can do the best job for our clients.

How Wedding Planners Work

Monday, February 2nd, 2009
How does it work to have a wedding planner? Brides sometimes think that having a planner means they don’t get to do anything and the planner makes all the decisions. This couldn’t be further from the truth. For myself and many other wonderful Colorado wedding planners, we take the time to learn what wedding planning tasks you want to be part of (cake tastings, design meetings, catering tastings) and what you don’t want to deal with (managing the budget, pulling all your ideas together, arranging transportation, confirming the rental orders). The bride and groom always have the final decision. We want you to have the wedding of YOUR dreams (not our dreams!). Here are a few tips on how most professional wedding planners do business.

Pricing - most planners charge either a flat rate, hourly rate or a percentage of the wedding budget. Save the Date Events uses a combination of flat rate and hourly, depending on what our client needs.

Logistics - We can be present at all of your vendor meetings, some of your vendors meetings or none of them! Some planners choose to attend a certain number of meetings while other planners insist on being at every single one. There is no right or wrong answer. It depends on what the bride and groom feel comfortable with. Also, if you are having a destination wedding, your planner will usually act as your representative at most vendor meetings.

Vendor Relationships and Payments - Planners work with you to find the best vendors who fit your style and budget. The bride and groom make the final decision, sign the vendor contract and pay the deposit to the vendor. This is how we work at Save the Date Events. We are your advocate during vendor meetings, keep track of your vendor payments and only recommend the absolute best vendors to fit your style and budget. Once you make a final decision on the vendor, you sign the contract and pay the vendor directly. Then we work with your vendors on the wedding day logistics and details of their service.

Colorado Wedding Flowers - Design Classes

Monday, January 26th, 2009
Danielle, Debbie and Gabby from Save the Date Events at first floral design class from Bella Fiori

Flowers created by Save the Date Events

Gabby, Danielle and Debbie from Save the Date Events at second floral design class from Bella Fiori

Our expert instructors from Bella Fiori - Sarah and Alicia

Over the past two weeks, we have taken six hours of professional floral design courses from expert wedding floral designer Alicia Schwede at Bella Fiori Events. We started with the “Basics” class to learn the details of floral foam, taping, stem preparation and centerpiece basics. We created three very different centerpieces with help and instruction from Alicia and Sarah.

Our second class, “Hand Tied Bouquets” was my personal favorite. We learned how to prepare stems, choose the best flowers and create bouquets with uniformity and style. For any DIY brides who insist on doing their own flowers, consider taking a class from Alicia. There is much more skill involved in creating a beautiful bouquet than simply tying pretty flowers together.

Why did a group of wedding consultants take floral design classes? Aside from the fact that we LOVE flowers, we took these classes so that we can be better consultants for our clients. Having a deeper understanding of the entire floral design process allows to be better wedding designers and speak fluently about flowers with our clients.

Meet the Team - Danielle

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Name: Danielle Meyer

Number of years in the wedding business: This will be my second full season working in the wedding industry. My experience lies in the field of interior design–more specifically commercial interior design, which includes design of such things as hotels, restaurants, corporate offices, fitness clubs, hair salons and retail spaces.

Favorite wedding detail:  I love flowers! I think the right use, color, and amount of flowers can be used to accent the smallest details (like your menu card on a folded linen napkin) or become one the biggest focal points–like your centerpieces and bouquets. Flowers are one of the easiest ways to add style and color to your wedding day.

Favorite moment at weddings:  I live for the moment when the groom first sees the bride. In my opinion, there is nothing that shows the couple’s love for each other more than that simple exchange. I absolutely melt if he gets a tear!

Favorite Colorado venues:  Maroon Bells in Aspen for an outdoor mountain ceremony that will take your breath away. Botanic Gardens or Hudson Gardens as alternatives to the typical ceremony and reception spots in the Denver metro area.

Five words that describe me: Stylish, Fun, Creative, Detail-oriented, Loving and Open (I know I cheated, but the last 2 are inseparable for me!)

Five words that absolutely do not describe me: Superficial, high-maintenance, sloppy, closed-minded, dull.

My Starbucks order is:  I get sleepy on caffeine–weird, I know–so I often go for hot cocoa or tea.

My hobbies and interests:  I have made a career out of my love and interest for design. I ooze creativity, so wedding and interior design are the perfect canvas on which to create exciting designs with clients.
I also play soccer 3-4 times a week as a way to maintain balance in my life and stay in shape. I love anything athletic and outdoorsy…camping, hiking, climbing, etc. Most of my downtime is spent with my fiance and my enormous Great Dane puppy!

Name: Gabriella Cavalli

Number of years in wedding business: Five years, starting with my sister’s wedding in 2004, followed by an internship, the opening of my own company and continuing education and coordination after moving to Denver. I’ve been with Save the Date Events for the past two years.
Favorite Wedding Detail: Firstly I would have to say the dress. I am a girl who loves fashion and everything to do with it. However, I don’t know if I would consider that a wedding detail-more a wedding necessity! Flowers, however, are my all time favorite part of the wedding day. Flowers can be so versatile and can make a huge difference in your décor. Not only do they smell wonderful, but a professional florist can create so many options with flowers that they can basically tie an idea into your wedding, or create the basis for your entire wedding theme.
Favorite Moment at Weddings: My favorite moment at the wedding is during the reception, after dinner and before cake. This is when the guests are happy and relaxed, chatting with friends and family, and possibly dancing. Often this is the time when the couple can truly take a moment, breath, and reflect on how their hard work and planning turned a regular day into their very own special day that will be remembered for years.
Favorite Colorado Venues: Arrowhead, Grant Humphrey’s Mansion, The Stanley Hotel

Five words that Describe me: Observant, Courteous, Creative, Happy and Loving
Five words that Absolutely do not Describe me: Strict, Rude, Boring, Up-Tight and Ignorant

My Starbucks order is: Tall Chai Tea Latte, extra milk

My Hobbies and Interests: Spending time with my friends and family, walking my dogs and shopping!
